Here we go to the text of my speech :)
Assalamualaikum w.b.t. and a very good afternoon to Bro. Mahyuddin and my fellow friends. Today, I, Nurul Huda bt Mohd Pauzi, am going to discuss on the hottest issue that’s happening currently. Can you guess what it is? It is “The Pro and Cons of Sekolah Harapan in Malacca”. Without further delay, let me begin my speech.
First and foremost, let me ask you, ‘Do you know, what “Sekolah Harapan” is?
This school located at Jalan Pegawai, Jasin, was opened on 17th of Sept. Now, if I’m not mistaken, it already has 10 students. The school is converted from two buildings owned by Air Melaka Berhad, which is now equipped with a hostel and is managed by the Malacca Islamic Religious Council.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, who mooted the idea of setting up the school for teenagers who became pregnant out of wedlock, said he was informed that the baby would be cared for by the student's family. Besides protecting the pregnant teenagers, this school was also set up to avoid dumping of unwanted babies, he said.
Ok, now, is that clear? Next, we go to positive side of this school and how it operates. Yes, to change someone, we need to approach them first and pull them into our world slowly. So that we can be friends to the teenagers who are having social problems. Then, right after that, we can slowly teach them what Islam has outlined in the Al-Quran and sunnah. Certain aspects that will need to be stressed are counseling, spirituality, understanding of Al-Quran and sunnah, and tenets. It should be remembered that the students come from different backgrounds, some of them have some basic in religious knowledge but do not practice it, and some have no basic at all. So educators or coordinators should play a role in instilling some awareness on the teachings of Islam. They should not only focus on academics but the religion as well. For a number of those non-muslim, they can also learn about Islam if they want to. Besides that, I, as a woman, feel so secured or protected because, there are still some people who support the teenagers or women who have accidently got themselves pregnant since the society or their family do not accept them and even regard them as rubbish. If this happens, can you imagine what will happen next? Yes, for sure, abortion or baby-dumping! My gosh! Babies nowadays are being thrown just like priceless dolls.
At the end of the day, many people outside there are worried about the epidemic of illegal sexual intercourse since there are school or society who accept them for instance, Sekolah Harapan. When the media is busy talking about the abandoned babies, the increase number of drug addicts, AIDS patients and adultery is very rampant nowadays. Ironically, the Economic Transformation Program (ETP) is offering a solution to make Malaysia as an entertainment hub?
Ok, now, I would like to ask all of you, what is the use of setting up this school, when the government keeps supporting the causes or the roots of the problems which is entertainment itself?
Based on my research, the government has added the insult to the injury by supporting hedonism (excessive entertainment) as a part of our lifestyle. This has been proven through the existence of the fourth national key economic area based on tourism which I quote,
“Events, entertainment, spa and sports: Malaysia is left behind our neighbours in the magnitude and variety of events as well as in our nightlife offerings. Hosting more international events and promoting a vibrant nightlife is necessary to attract tourists and provide a boost to the tourism industry.”
Why do we need to compare ourselves with our neighboring countries when we should have been holding to our own principles and our own ways in order to develop our nation. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a method used by another government to develop their country can make us developed also and is proven to be the best for us.
As a conclusion, we can see that there are advantages and disadvantages of the establishment of Sekolah Harapan but what is the point of setting up the school when we aren’t solving the root of the problem. Even if we build hundreds and thousands of Sekolah Harapan in pursuit of stopping teenage pregnancy, it will be no use and we can never achieve the objective if we don’t tackle the problem from the roots and all our efforts will be fruitless because of the existence and the ongoing support by the government on hedonism which leads to the downfall of the moral of the youth’s nowadays.
